Rebecca Dossett, Ph.D., LPC

Rebecca Dossett, Ph.D., LPC, has been a practitioner specializing in the treatment of people with autism spectrum disorders for four decades. She began her training in this specialty at Division TEACCH at The University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. She is a graduate of The University of Mobile (BA in English and Psychology), Western Carolina University (MA. Ed. in non-school Guidance and Counseling), and the University of Alabama (Ph.D. in Educational Psychology.) Dr. Dossett was the first Executive Director of the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC), which founded the first group homes and residential summer camps in the nation for people with autism. She served as the Director of the ASNC residential summer camps for 12 years, which provided extensive clinical exposure beyond the typical clinical setting. From 1986 to 1996, Dr. Dossett held clinical faculty appointments at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Schools of Medicine and Education. She was instrumental in the organization of the Autism Society of Alabama and served as a member of the ASA Board of Directors for many years. Dr. Dossett participated as a Clinical Reviewer on the epidemiological study commissioned by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the ongoing measure of the incidence and prevalence of people with autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Dossett was awarded the “Commitment to Autism Research, Education, and Service Award” at the Annual Conference sponsored by the Autism Society of Alabama and the University of Alabama PDD Clinic.

Dr. Dossett’s private practice focuses on diagnostic evaluations, treatment, family/school consultation, and advocacy. She sees people throughout the life span, from toddlers to mature adults. She makes home visits and provides agency consultation throughout Alabama and adjoining Southeastern states. Her treatment approaches include the TEACCH methods, cognitive behavior therapy, and dynamic approaches, as appropriate.

Over the last two decades, Dr. Dossett has developed a sub-specialty in diagnosing and treating older adolescents, college-age young adults, mature adults, and couples. Many of her previously undiagnosed clients have struggled throughout life with school, work, and relationship problems without understanding their struggle, and without appropriate intervention and support.

Dr. Dossett’s practice also includes neurotypical people who have mental health struggles. Her therapeutic theoretical frameworks include psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral strategies. 933-9276 Extension 111.
